Built on a rocky promontory, the town of Priene seems to be clinging to the tree-covered slopes. Its charm remains intact, with its beautifully proportioned buildings and religious monuments exuding a delightfully gentle quality of life. This superb and unspoilt environment is where Alexander the Great financed the building of a sanctuary in honour of Athena. Milet lies just opposite, on the other side of the plain of Balat. The theatre dominates the city: enter via the cavea and admire the fabulous tiered seats that could take 15,000 spectators. After a local lunch, admire the magnificently preserved heads of Medusa at Didyma, and one of the largest temples in the world dedicated to Apollo.
