Cairo (1 day)
A fabulous univsere in which past and present mingle with ease, the "mother of the world" offers ancient monuments, bustling city life and the majestic Pyramids. The Museum of Cairo houses Tutankhamons treasure, mummies, statues, sarcophagi and countless other wonders of the world. The fascinating and majestic Pyramids of Giza dominate the city and continue to astonish and amaze visitors of all ages and horizons. After lunch, admire the last of the 7 wonders of the world, and the stone Sphinx, guardian of the temple of the sun. The Mohammed Ali mosque is a fascinating sanctuary with narrow stain-glassed windows that cast multicoloured light all around. The prince who is buried here wanted it to resemble the sanctuaries of his home city, Istanbul. Round off your day by exploring the citadel of Salah al-Din, also known as the Mountain Castle.

The "accidental" discovery of a first statue led to the unearthing of a wealth of fabulous monuments, remarkably preserved over thousands of years. The Museum of Luxor houses a magnificent collection of sculptures and objects, including the monumental head of Amenophis the 3rd and the famous Talatat Wall, a reminder of the era when Thebes was one of the greatest capital cities of the world. Luxor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Royal Necropolis and Temple of Hatshepsut (1/2 day)
The divine beauty of this painted face is proof that the Egyptian tombs are not an invitation to meditate upon death but in fact a tribute to life. From the 18th dynasty, pharaohs were no longer buried in luxurious monuments but in tombs in the ground. On the west bank of the Nile in the land of the Afterworld lies the famous valley, overlooked by a sharp mountain peak, housing 63 tombs of great Egyptian rulers. On the other side of the mountain, the Valley of the Queens, known as the place of the kings sons, is home to the princes and princesses of the royal family. In the amphitheatre of Deir El Bahri, the two impassive giants who represent Pharaoh Amenophis the 3rd guard the funerary temple of Hatshepsut. Named the most sublime, its architecture, among the most remarkable in Egypt, merges perfectly with the cliff. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The temples of Abydos and Denderah (1 day)
The history of the city of Abydos goes back into the mists of time. Its priests claimed to possess a relic of the utmost importance: the head of the god Osiris. About ten temples were built on this site. Abydos, an ancient holy city of Egypt dedicated to the cult of the god Osiris, became the principal religious centre of the country during the Middle Kingdom period. The Mysteries of Osiris attracted pilgrims from all over Egypt. The monumental complex of Denderah was the capital of the 6th nome of Upper Egypt. Its crypts built inside the very thick walls and decorated with intricate low reliefs make it an extraordinary place to visit.

The temples of Karnak and Louxor (1/2 day)
The children playing in the dusty streets are worlds away from the Thebes that was the capital of the 18th dynasty. An avenue lined with giant rams, bigger than buffaloes, stretches before you, leading to the sacred lake where Amon-Rê, king of the gods, came every year in his golden boat. The most staggering wonder of these ruins is the Hypostyle Hall and the hypnotic charm of its 134 columns. An avenue lined with human-headed sphynxes leads you to the Temple of Luxor, known as the "harem of the south". This 260-metre long temple was built by two Pharaohs, whose statues radiate an impression of eternal peace. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Valleys of the nobles and craftsmen and Medinet Habou (1/2 day)
The village of Gurna has over 400 burial places. Each individual had to prepare his tomb, to gain entry to the house of death built for eternal life. The valley of the nobles has more than 400 tombs, all with the same layout. A vestibule has painted scenes of daily life, larger than life, and leads to a niche set into the wall holding the statue of the deceased. Scenes of country life illustrate episodes in the life of top state functionaries, viziers and artisans or sculptors. Nearby, the only inhabited place on the left bank was the village of tradesmen. Cut off from the rest of the population, they worked on the construction of the royal tombs of Thebes. Not far off was the site where Ramses the 3rd hoped to build his "castle of a million years". The guards quarters, formed of two low crenellated towers, frame the imposing gate of the fortress of Medinet Habou.
